More about Dr. Abel

Growing up, Dr. Abel's days were filled with exploring in the woods behind her family's turn of the century farmhouse, and helping to take care of the many animals that called the farm "home".  Her mother would joke that they had a neon sigh that only stray animals could see that read "free food, shelter, and cuddling."

Throughout her youth, she was never without a pet by her side.  Her formative years were surrounded by a myriad of dogs, cats, horses, bunnies, chickens, and the list goes on and on.  This is where her love of animals started.  As she got older, she continued to surround herself with furry and feathered friends.  Her first job as a teenager was at a local riding stable, that she would frequent at least three times a week.  The pay was great!  For roughly $0 a week, she got to ride all she wanted, groom 15-20 horses daily and got to muck out stalls and haul hay bales.  She was in heaven.  She ended up working at the stables through high school.  At some point, she did start to get paid, but even to this day, she admits that she still would have done it for free.

During high school, she participated in drama, equestrian club, 4-H and the local shooting club, in addition to also working for a mixed animal veterinarian.  It was here, that she first thought about becoming a veterinarian.  She started as a kennel assistant and worked her way to doctor assistant over the next 6 years.

After high school, she attended college, with the intent to pursue international business with an emphasis on foreign language.  One week in, she glanced down at a picture of her pets and realized that she had chosen the wrong path.  The same day, she switched over to pre-veterinary medicine and never looked back.

After veterinary school, Dr. Abel, her husband Mathew, and their son Zachery moved back to Michigan, to be closer to family.  She worked in the veterinary emergency field for three years.  Following the birth of their daughter Lucy, it was time to move into a day practice.  Cascade Hospital for Animals has since become her home away from home.  She loves practicing here and feels privileged to be able to practice high quality medicine with such a wonderful group of veterinarians and staff, for such amazing clients and pets.  She has a passion for companion animal care and is honored to be able to provide compassionate care for your furry loved ones!
